Cash on Delivery Sofas in the UK: How It Works and What to Check

Paying for a sofa only when it turns up sounds almost too good to be true, so people are right to be careful. Here is how it actually works, what it protects you from, and the questions worth asking before you agree to anything.

The short version

Cash on delivery, usually shortened to COD, means you hand over payment at the moment the sofa arrives rather than when you place the order. It is common in some countries and unusual in UK furniture retail, which is exactly why it makes people suspicious.

Used honestly it is a reasonable way to buy. It shifts the risk of the sofa never arriving away from you and onto the seller, which is the risk most people worry about. What it does not do is replace your legal rights, and it is not a substitute for checking who you are buying from.

Why cash on delivery is rare in UK furniture

Most UK sofa retailers take payment or a deposit up front, for two reasons. The first is cash flow: a sofa is expensive to make or to buy in, and a seller who is paid only on delivery carries that cost themselves. The second is cancellation risk. If a customer changes their mind on the doorstep, the seller is left with a sofa built to someone else's measurements that nobody else wants.

So when a seller does offer COD, it usually means one of two things. Either they are small enough to absorb that risk in exchange for winning your trust, or something is wrong. Telling the difference is what the rest of this guide is about.

What COD protects you from, and what it doesn't

RiskDoes COD help?
Paying for a sofa that never arrivesYes. This is the main benefit.
A seller disappearing after taking your depositYes, if you pay nothing up front.
The sofa arriving in the wrong colour or sizePartly. You can refuse it at the door before paying.
A fault that only appears weeks laterNo. Your legal rights cover this, not the payment method.
Buying from a business that does not really existNo. Check this separately, before you order.

Your legal rights are the same either way

This is the part people get wrong. Paying cash at the door does not put you outside consumer law, and it does not mean you have bought the sofa “as seen” with no comeback.

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, anything you buy from a business must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. If it is not, you have the short-term right to reject it within 30 days for a full refund, and the right to a repair or replacement after that. Those rights apply whether you paid by card in advance or in cash on your doorstep.

One genuine difference is worth knowing. Paying by credit card for anything between £100 and £30,000 gives you an extra layer of protection under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, where the card company shares liability with the seller. Cash does not carry that. If that protection matters to you, ask whether you can pay by card instead.

The other side: what the seller is protecting

A seller offering COD on a made-to-order sofa is carrying real risk, so expect some reasonable conditions. A small deposit to confirm the specification is normal and does not make the offer less genuine. What matters is that any deposit is explained clearly before you pay it, and that you are told exactly what happens to it if you cancel.

You can read how we handle cancellations and faults on our returns and cancellations page, written in plain English rather than buried in small print.

Questions to ask before you agree

Keep the conversation in writing. If you order over WhatsApp, you already have a dated record of the price, the fabric, the size and what was promised. Do not delete it once the sofa arrives — it is the most useful evidence you have if anything goes wrong later.

On the day: check before you pay

The whole value of COD is the few minutes you get before the money changes hands. Use them properly.

If something is wrong, say so there and then, while the delivery team is still with you. That is far easier than arranging a collection afterwards.

How we do it

We offer cash on delivery on most orders, or a deposit with the balance settled when the sofa arrives. Every sofa is made to order in your choice of size, fabric and colour, and delivery is free across mainland UK. We are a delivery-only business based in Blackburn, Lancashire, with no public showroom — the whole order is arranged over WhatsApp, where you get photographs, fabric details and a firm price before you commit to anything.

If you want to see how that works in practice, our Blackburn and Lancashire page sets out the areas we cover and how delivery runs.

Common questions

Is cash on delivery safe when buying a sofa?

It can be, and it removes the biggest risk — paying for something that never arrives. But it does not verify the seller for you. Check the trading name and address, keep your order conversation in writing, and inspect the sofa before you hand over any money.

Do I still have legal rights if I pay cash?

Yes. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies however you pay. The sofa must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described, and you have 30 days to reject a faulty one for a full refund. The one thing cash lacks is section 75 credit card protection.

Can I refuse the sofa at the door?

If it is faulty, damaged or not what you agreed, yes — that is the point of checking before you pay. Refusing simply because you have changed your mind is different, because a sofa built to your own measurements cannot be resold, and made-to-order goods are exempt from the 14-day cooling-off right.

Should I pay a deposit?

A small deposit on a made-to-order sofa is normal and reasonable, because the seller is committing materials and labour to your specification. What matters is that the amount and the cancellation terms are explained clearly before you pay it.

Is cash on delivery available everywhere in the UK?

That depends on the seller and how far they deliver. We offer it on most orders across mainland UK, but it is always worth confirming for your postcode when you ask for a quote.
