What you'll need
A tape measure, a pen and paper, and about ten minutes. If you can, get a second person to hold the other end of the tape — measuring a long wall alone is where most mistakes creep in.
Step 1 — Measure the walls the sofa will sit against
A corner sofa occupies two walls. Measure each wall separately, from corner to corner, at floor level rather than at waist height — skirting boards, pipe boxing and uneven plaster all change the usable length.
Write down both numbers. We'll refer to these as your long side and short side.
Step 2 — Check what's on those walls
Note the position and height of anything that stops the sofa sitting flush:
- Radiators — measure from the floor to the bottom of the radiator, and how far it projects from the wall
- Plug sockets — a sofa back covering a socket is a common regret
- Window sills — a low sill may limit the back height of the sofa
- Doors — check which way they swing into the room
Step 3 — Measure the access route (the step people skip)
This is the single most common cause of a failed delivery. Your sofa has to physically get into the room. Measure:
| Point | What to measure |
|---|---|
| Front door | Width and height of the opening, with the door open |
| Hallway | Narrowest width, and the width at any turn |
| Stairs | Width, plus the ceiling height above the turn if there is one |
| Room doorway | Width and height of the opening |
| Tightest corner | Diagonal space available to pivot |
If any of these are tight, tell us before you order. We can often build the sofa in modular sections that fit through a narrow door and assemble in the room.
Step 4 — Think about how you'll use it
Measurements tell us what fits. How you sit tells us what to recommend. Let us know:
- How many people usually sit on it at once
- Whether anyone lies full-length on it (this decides the chaise length)
- Whether you prefer a firmer, upright seat or a deep sink-in one
- Whether the chaise should be on the left or right as you face the sofa
Step 5 — Send it to us
Send the numbers on WhatsApp along with a photo or two of the room. A photo tells us things measurements don't — the light, the doorway position, where the TV is — and lets us suggest a configuration that actually works.
We'll come back with the exact dimensions we'd build, fabric options and a firm price, usually within minutes.
A quick checklist
- Long wall length (at floor level)
- Short wall length (at floor level)
- Radiator, socket and sill positions
- Front door, hallway, stairs and room door widths
- Left-hand or right-hand chaise
- Photos of the room
